Things I'm interested in that the people who know me are sick of hearing about. By Peter Koechley. |
In the book Made To Stick by the Heath Brothers, they describe the idea of the Commander’s Intent. Goes something like this: As battle plans make their way down the chain of command, they become incredibly detailed and specific. But as soon as a fighting starts and reality intervenes, the plans are rendered immediately useless. So rather than having soldiers worried about what Step 6 is while taking unexpected fire, commanders now write a clear, simple sentence at the top of the orders explaining the goal of the mission in plain language.
I desperately want Google Maps to adopt a similar idea.
In addition to giving me 20 inidividual directions and the name of every street I’m going to be on for 80 feet, I’d love them to give me a headline-level plan hitting “What Bridge Out Of Town,” “What Major Highway(s) Do I Get On,” and “For About How Long.” Something on the level of “The BQE to the Whitestone Bridge then hop on the Taconic and stay on it for like 90 minutes.” In plain language.
